The stock market, the common market, the Berlin wall, cholesterol, automation, investigations and taxes. These are the imminent problems of our day and times. But somehow they do not exist, on this sunny day, inside New York City's Webster Hall. There, assembled for a record session, are fifty musicians ― members of Mitchell Ayres' orchestra and the Ray Charles Singers. And in their midst stands a man as familiar (and every bit as relaxing) to Americans as the "coffee break," "Mr. C," himself, Perry Como. He has chosen to record a dozen popular songs . . . melodies he believes will prove enduring beyond their "hit" status of the moment. "I'll Remember April," "My Favorite Things," "Moon River," "Maria" and "Once Upon a Time" are among them. With his hands extended slightly before him, fingers laced, head tilted to one side (the attitude so familiar to millions) he sings them, molds them, one after the other. No note is thrown away, or forced, or covered over. It is all there, clean, clear . . . naturally, beautifully expressive. When the day is over, the session has ended. The musicians and engineers depart, and the world again closes in on Webster Hall. But in the meantime it has known an unusual presence . . . a presence now carefully etched on RCA Victor records (to help you push the world out of your living room)! And, without a doubt, it is the finest album ever recorded by Perry Como. How does he do it? Easy.
