of Irving Berlin's ballad classics. It was published as a non-production
song and is listed that way in the Berlin catalog, even though it was
interpolated by Grace Moore in the Stage Musical "Music Box Revue"
after the opening. The song was sung by a chorus in "Alexander's
Ragtime Band" in 1938; it was sung by Danny Thomas in "Big
City", 1948; and was prominently used as the background theme
throughout "The Great Gatsby" in 1974. In addition to Perry's
recording in 1947, other popular recordings by Paul Whiteman for RCA Victor
and Decca, Henry Burr and Marcia Freer, also for RCA Victor, Art Lund for
MGM, Nat King Cole and Giselle McKenzie for Capitol, and Frank Sinatra for
Columbia.
