The Way You Look Tonight

Dorothy Fields ( 1905 - 1974 )

Songwriter, librettist. Born: July 15, 1905, Allenhurst, New Jersey. The daughter of comedian Lew Fields of Weber and Fields fame, and younger sister of playwrights-screenwriters Herbert and Joseph Fields, she began a highly successful career as a Broadway lyricist in 1928 and in the following four decades wrote hundreds of songs for stage and screen musicals, often in collaboration with composer Jimmy McHugh. She won an Academy Award for the song "The Way You Look Tonight" in the Astaire-Rogers film "Swing Time" (1936). She also wrote the books, usually in collaboration with brother Herbert, for several Broadway musical hits that were later brought to the screen, including Let's Face It, Something for the Boys, Mexican Hayride, Annie Get Your Gun, and Up in Central Park. She appeared as herself in the film "Stage Door Canteen" (1943).
